Understanding Homebound Patients
Nobody expects to be in a position where they are unable to leave their home and must depend on family members or hired caregivers to meet their basic needs. However, this is a reality for more than 4 million senior men and women in the U.S. today.
According to Medicare, individuals are considered homebound if illness or injury makes leaving the home require substantial effort or assistance. If they are able to leave at all, they only get outside for short periods of time while they seek medical care, but many opt to forego treatment all together because it is just too hard for them to travel.
Research shows the majority of homebound seniors suffer from a combination of conditions including metabolic, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and musculoskeletal diseases, as well as from cognitive impairment, dementia and depression. They also suffer at higher rates than the general elderly population. In fact, almost 32% have 4 or more of these diseases at the same time.
Free Range Health is working to enrich the lives of these individuals by taking away the burden of leaving the home to receive medical care. Acupuncture and other alternative medicine modalities are rapidly gaining acceptance as effective ways to support conventional medical treatments in helping to improve the health and wellbeing of patients. Our Free Range Days allow us to deliver these services to patients where it is most convenient for them.
When you support our organization, you allow us to bring much-needed relief to patients and caregivers without the difficulty and upheaval caused by traveling outside the home.
